A doll house by Henrik Ibsen is a modern drama whose characters fail to understand who they really are. The theme of self-discovery can be viewed throughout the entire play. Noras character plays an important role in self-discovery. She is a dynamic character who proves at the end of the play that she accept and discovers who the true Nora is. I am the paragon of test, tribulation, and trial by fire. Yet, I have not been broken†¦ A conversation after learning about the condemning words of a 1st grade teacher. â€Å"I do not understand your concern. Most children DO NOT start learning how to read until third grade. And he’s not even a gifted student,† said the principal to my mother. The principal’s remarks left my mother despondent. I vividly remember sitting in a class of 1st graders encamped around the teacher as she read; eager to learn. The guidance in my setting are clear and if I had to report an incident of suspected abuse I would know who and how to report this. My organisation and myself understand that data protection is a legal legislation where the information held on service users must be kept safe, must be accurate, kept up to date and used only as needed. In my work setting data protection is held very highly as the information held in the setting about service users may be of a very sensitive nature and not for public knowledge. Staff are required to complete mandatory training on confidentiality, and are aware of the consequences if they breach the policies and procedures of the organisation regarding data protection and confidentiality. As all information on a service user is covered by the data protection/ confidentiality policies there are times when this information can not be kept secret e. g. when abuse is suspected. Divisibility Argument Essay DIVISIBILITY ARGUMENTThis paper will discuss the dualisms Divisibility Argument. This argument relies on Leibnizs Law and uses a different property to prove the distinctness of brain states of mental states. Mary, who is a materialist, presents several objections to that argument. Her main objection corresponds to the first/third-person approach. She believes that Dave presents that argument only from the first-person approach, which is introspection, and totally disregards the third-person approach, which is observation of another mind. Marys objections will follow by the Daves response on them from the dualists point of view. The purpose of the Divisibility Argument is to prove that mental states are different from the brain states. My body, which includes my brain, is divisible. However, I cannot conceive of my mind as divisible. Therefore, my mind is distinct from any part of my body. Descartes was the first who established the Divisibility Argument. He held that the two components which constitute man had an independent origin and are of a fundamentally different nature. The body is divisible, since it can be separated for example, my leg or my hand can be cut off; my brain can be cut on half. However, the idea of the divisible mind is inconceivable. This argument relies on the Leibnizs Law. It is a principle about identity, which says, if an object or event X is identical with an object or event Y, then X and Y have all of the same properties. So if X and Y have any different properties, then X can not be identical with Y. Divisibility Argument uses a different property to prove the distinctness of brain states and mental states: the property of being indivisible. In this case, the mind has a property and brain lacks it. The body can be divided, however, it cannot be done with the mind. Mary has several objections to this argument. First, she believes that the mind is an entity, which is composed of several mental states: thoughts, beliefs, memories, desires, etc. Mary strongly disagrees with Descartes claim that the mind employs itself in its different properties: willing, desiring, understanding, and so on. Secondly, she clarifies the meaning of the word conceive in the Daves argument. The term conceive might mean either imagine or understand. Imagining literally involves forming an image of or picturing in ones mind, whereas understanding is more conceptual and does not require the ability to picture something. In case, Dave interprets the word conceive as imagine in the second premise of the argument, this premise becomes untrue. The fact that he cannot imagine something to be the case does not make it true in everyones case. Different minds can imagine different things. However, if Dave implies understand as a meaning of conceive the second premise still remain s doubtful. The fact that Dave cannot understand it does not exclude the possibility that someone else is capable to think of his mind as having parts. The next major objection to the Divisibility Argument concerns first/third-person approach. Mary rejects Daves assumption that the true nature of the mind can be understood solely through introspection or from the first-person approach. She claims that things that cannot be conceived through the first-person approach, which is introspection, can be understood or investigated through the third-person approach, which is observation and science. Therefore, even if it is true that the mind cannot be conceived as divided from the first-person perspective, it is possible that it would be the opposite from the third-person perspective. The perfect example of that case is the multiple personality disorder. It is about pulling resources together, create a vision and carry every around me along. This is the means by which I would approach the issues of sustaining the cultural heritage. A people that forget the elements of their past are doomed to loss in the midst of the crooked world; they are bound to have serious identity crises that would deter true and effective leadership which is essential to the present state of things and the future. My people would be ready to resurrect all dead elements of our culture. Indeed, as an architect, I value such arts and beautiful monuments laid by our ancestors and forefathers. I pay close attention to my LinkedIn status updates so that I can congratulate people on their new positions. When I got word that Becky S. had obtained a new position as an IT Business Analyst, I wrote to acknowledge her success and she shared the following about how she obtained her new position: Your webinars and e-book were a real encouragement and a definite part of the process.  Thanks for sharing and encouraging all job-seekers! I attended classes and weekly networking sessions at the local WorkForce center met my new boss there. Took a 3-month contract position  which lasted a year.  I am so thankful to have had this opportunity. Posted updates on LinkedIn when attending classes, announcing the approaching contract end and my desire to be the newest member of your team. My new boss maintained contact through LinkedIn.   He even downloaded my resume and considered me an applicant. Three interviews later I had an offer! Note that Becky used social media to her full advantage, demonstrating that even though she might be older she is computer-savvy and on top of current trends.  Also note that she was open to contract positions and accepted one that gave her valuable experience while she was actively looking for other work. Shortly after receiving this message from Becky, another one of my followers, Steven A., gave me the following wisdom stemming from his successful search for a senior-level accountant position: Volunteering was a great confidence-lifter and networking tool. I did that at North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center for six months.   It was extremely fulfilling; met new professional contacts / links  and  helped fill  the gap in the resume while  looking for  next position. Strong perseverance, applying for jobs that may not necessarily been 100% qualified for (i.e.  taking chances), Strong LinkedIn profiling participation in group discussions there Having good contacts (such as yourself, Brenda) that help you with strategies and point you in a good direction. Supportive job search services  such as Connect-To-Care  (Little Neck NY other New York locations: FEGS and other channels) were great support groups. Networking helps but unless it is properly targeted it wont always work (e.g. job fairs predominant in sale promotions or  solicitations / advertising  will not help an  unemployed, experienced, professional accountant. [Steven also warns:] Employers, recruiters HRs will never ever  admit it, but age is a negative running factor if the applicant is in fact, older (i.e. for example as myself, over 50).  Many agencies (I recall approaching at least a dozen)  dont ever get back to applicants. Only 2 in  12 ever gave me  leads in a years unemployment time. Job searches must be predominantly independently pursued. Steven’s insights hammer home the message that being active on LinkedIn and pursuing multiple networking opportunities are two keys for the older job seeker. LinkedIn can be used in multiple ways, from researching whom you might know at a particular company in order to network your way in, to   participating in groups, to highlighting your volunteer activities, to attracting recruiters with targeted keywords. In LinkedIn’s blog article, 5 Steps for Older Workers to Succeed in the Job Hunt, author Kerry Hannon offers the following tips: Use a professional e-mail address. [meaning something with your full name if possible, preferably at gmail or a paid provider). And use it! Note that Becky and Steven leveraged LinkedIn to its max and both of them found new positions!] Network. [You can network effectively both on LinkedIn and in person. Hannon points to a new, free service from AARP called Work Reimagined, which leverages LinkedIn’s API to help job hunters find information and job openings. You can sign up for customized job alert postings in your field of interest.] Start a Twitter account. [I defer to Hannon on this one. She says: â€Å"Follow people or companies where you might want to interview. For your username, use your actual name or a shortened form. Include a bio – where you live and what kind of work you do†¦. 160 characters. Non-financial incentives or motives are required as all the needs of individuals are not satisfied by money alone. The question here is that if financial rewards, motives or incentives are the best way to increase work motivation? In order to thoroughly understand this question, evaluations of both financial and non-financial rewards have to be conducted. To begin, financial rewards have been studied at large by numerous theorists. Some theorists support financial rewards at large. According to Frederick W. Taylor(2011), the most important motivator for employees are salaries and extra benefits such as cash rewards , travel allowances , housing, etc. He also stated that when employees get the same wage regardless of their goals they have to achieve, they tend to work less which may lead the company to an unstable situation Likewise Henry Gantt believed money rewards are a better way for reimbursing the hard work of an employee added to the normal salary. The two methods treat workers as laborers who toiled only for money and has been discouraged by the current form of management system. One theory was by Douglas McGregor, better known as theory X and theory Y, which differentiated between leadership styles/skills and management. Firstly he presumed that motivation and skills are different for all the members of a firm and also that all employees look at the same motivation in a different manner. Theory Y focuses on employees who are able to practice self-control and are able to direct themselves along with a liking towards their job. These employees are not just responsible but are also challenge seekers. New challenges and opportunities motivate these employees. These employees do not require much of supervision as they are self-motivated and show a great morale at work. These employees are not needed to be controlled or punished and help achieve goals and objectives more efficiently. Now when looking at the employees of theory X, one realizes that these employees do not enjoy their job or have a certain amount of disliking towards it. They are high irresponsible a nd need to guided, supervised and directed from time to time when given a certain task or responsibility. These employees burden the managers from time to time as they needed to be forced to work and when behaving not according to the code of conduct, they have to be punished. So people with needs such as self-actualization and more, work better with managers of theory Y as compared to theory X. But a certain amount of balance is needed between theory X and Y so all employees can grow and make progress in their careers. The financial incentives generally used in an organization are listed below: Pay and allowances: For every employee, salary is the basic monetary incentive. It includes basic pay, dearness allowance and other allowances. Productivity linked wage incentives: Several wage incentive plans aims at linking payment of wages to increase in productivity at individual or group level. Bonus: Bonus is an incentive offered over and above the wages/salary to the employees. Profit sharing: Profit sharing is meant to provide a share to employees in the profits of the organization. Co-partnership/stock: Under these incentive schemes, employees are offered company shares at a set price lower than market price. Retirement Benefits: Several retirement benefits such as provident fund, pension and gratuity provide financial security to employees after their retirement. Perquisites: In many companies perquisites and fringe benefits are offered such as car allowance, housing, medical aid, and education to the children etc., over and above the salary. (NCERT,2007,P.190-191) However, if our biological and safety needs are not satisfied, we die. If our needs of love and esteem are not satisfied, we can feel inferior and helpless, but if these needs are satisfied, we feel self-confident. Self-actualization and transcendence, Maslow argued, are our ultimate goals. While the implications if self-actualization have been widely explored, the meta-physical concept of transcendence has been largely ignored by management writers and researchers. (Buchanan and Huczynski,2010,P.268). Maslow argued that self-actualized people are rare, and that creating conditions for us to develop our capabilities to this extent was challenging task. He also argued that these needs are organized in a hierarchy, with lower order biological and safety needs at the bottom, and higher order self-actualization and transcendence needs at the top. (Buchanan and Huczynski,2010,P.268). Abraham Maslows needs hierarchy: Self-actualization: Need to develop our full potential Freedom of equity and expression: Need that is a prerequisite for the satisfaction of other needs Transcendence: A spiritual need, to be at one with the universe Aesthetics: Need for order and beauty To know and to understand: Need to gain and to systematize knowledge, the need for curiosity, learning, philosophizing, experimenting and exploring Esteem: Need for strength, confidence, achievement, self-esteem, independence, and for reputation, prestige, recognition, attention and appreciation, and respect of others Affiliation: need for attachment, belongingness, affection, love, relationship Safety: Need for security, comfort, tranquility, freedom from fear and threat from environment, for shelter, order, predictability, an organized world Biological: need for sunlight, sexual expression, food, water, rest and oxygen-need basic to our survival.(Buchanan and Huczynski,2010,P.268). People working in companies have certain expectations from the environment around them. It is not always the financial incentives but also the people, the manager, the family time and all the given to an employee that motivates them. The needs are not satisfied by money only, emotional, psychological and social factors play a key role in providing motivation. (NCERT,2007,P.190-191). Here is an example, In 2008, The Sunday times newspaper, surveyed over 500 companies and 180,000 employees to identify the best company to work for in the UK the award was won by heat, a central heating installation based in Belfast. W.L. Gore Associates, who won the prize in the previous four years, came eleventh. Companies were rated on eight factors: Leadership: how employees feel about the of the company and senior managers Wellbeing: how staffs feel about stress, pressure and the balance between work and home life My manager: peoples feelings towards their immediate boss and their day-to-day managers My team: peoples feelings about their immediate colleagues Fair deal: how happy the workforce is with their pay and benefits Giving something back: how much companies are thought by their staff to put back into society, and the local community My company: feelings about the company as opposed to the people they work with Personal growth: to what extent the staffs feel they are stretched and challenged by their job Heats managing director said that their success was based on the companys approach communication; we work hard to make it simple. If you make it simple everybody understands and that makes it more likely to last. (Buchanan and Huczynski,2010,P.271). The company in the above example isnt a high paid company, but the working environment around them motivates the employees to work hard and give their best. Yes, financial incentives are important, but without a friendly work force and enough time given by a company to their employees for their family and social ethics, its practically no use. There are disadvantages of financial or monetary motivation, employees in the company might take things for granted. They will expect bonuses even at times when they dont end up working towards organizational goal. But if there arent any monetary incentives given, what will the employee work for. Monetary or financial incentives also help in guiding and moving the employees towards the goal of the organization. Apart from the advantage and disadvantage of financial motive, non-financial incentives also have their own advantages, keeping the employee happy in the company with the friendly environment, companies providing fair amount of break time and activity rooms such as Google. The work timings are at most important as the employees get time with their families and friends and also maintain a great social life along with their work. Some of the important non-financial incentives are discussed below: Status: in the organizational context, status means ranking of positions in the organization. Organizational climate: organizational climate indicates the characteristics which describe an organization and distinguish one organization from others. Career advancement opportunity: every individual wants to grow to the higher level in the recognition. They feel that what they do should be recognized by others concerned. Job security: employees want their job to be secure. They want stability about their future work and income. Employee participation: it means involving employees in decision making of issues related to the company. Employee empowerment: empowerment means, giving more autonomy and powers to subordinates. (NCERT,2007,P.192-193) According to the 2011 Hays Salary Guide, 78 per cent of employers give their employees benefits, or non-financial rewards, in addition to salaries and bonuses. Health is the number one benefit in Hong Kong, offered by 71 per cent of employers. Life assurance is offered by 63 per cent, a pension by 60 per cent, and a housing allowance by 37 per cent. Other benefits include tax equalisation, club or gym membership, a car or car allowance, and private expenses. Typically, benefits increase with experience and the seniority of the position. They are used to motivate and reward top performers, with employers recognising that a motivated employee will achieve the best results. Thus, there is little room to negotiate as your performance and value are the determining factors. There are also countless cases of employers using benefits to reward top performers when they are unable to increase salaries beyond a certain level.   But again, the awarding of additional benefits is based on the employees past performance and is also a tool to motivate future performance. If planning on negotiating benefits package, tread carefully. Employers will only extend their offers so far. So speaking with recruiter to ensure expectations are realistic for the role and industry, or this could leave the employer with doubts over commitment to the role.   As a final note, expatriate packages that include extensive non-financial rewards are a thing of the past. Traditionally, expats brought a wealth of experience and excellent education from abroad to a company, and as such were rewarded accordingly. DIATOMITE   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Diatomite is a sedimentary rock, that is white and yellowish in color. It is composed of fossilized skeletons of one-celled algae-like plants called diatoms. It is accumulated in marine areas. The Honeycomb sillia structure is useful because of its high absorptive capacity and surface area. It is also very chemically stable. Its principal use is filtration.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This substance of diatomite is extracted from many countries around the world. Out of 30 world countries the largest suppliers are the United States, China, Denmark, and Japan. China supplies about 350 thousand metric tons, Denmark extracts 375 thousand metric tons, and Japan, 190 thousand metric tons. About 725 thousand metric tons of diatomite are extracted from the US Worldwide about 2,150 thousand metric tons are removed from the earth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This product consists of approximately 90 percent silica, and the remainder consists of compounds such as aluminum and iron oxides. The material is extracted by a dredging barge cuts sediment with rotating knives, mixes it with water and pumps it along a suspended pipeline to the shore. Because diatomite is made from a skeletal structure of diatoms, it isn’t made of chemicals that need to be extracted. It is highly unreactive to other chemicals. It also has a low thermal conductivity rate and a high fusion point.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Most diatomite mines are open pit mines because the deposits are usually at or near the surface. Open pit mines are especially hard on the environment because they are very large holes in the ground. Diatomite is also mined when geologic uplifting brings these deposits above sea level. The diatomite is easily mined this way, however, being in marine areas, pollution in the water is a big concern. Through the use of many mining machines, the waters can be easily polluted. The method of dredging to cut away at the sediment does not seem like it would be as environmentally friendly as well. Aside from the mining having impact on the actual land, diatomite mining has impacts on birds in surrounding areas. Many birds show a tendency to avoid dredging areas. Besides factors of noise and pollution and general unpleasantness of machines, birds also rely on animals in shallow water for food where dredging has occurred.   Ã‚  &nbs... ...any different areas. I feel that mining of this product is worth the impact it leaves on the environment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I was most likely taking diatomite for granted. I was not even aware that it was a product, let alone that it was useful in different ways. A lot of things I use daily would not be the same without the use of diatomite. I drink soda every day, and I would not get that drink if it were not filtered. I’ve never even wondered about how water in a swimming pool is filtered, yet if it were not, I’m positive swimming would not be as enjoyable in the summer. I like the fact that diatomite seems incredibly useful for very important things, such as toxic waste, antibiotics and water filtration. I also think it is exceptional because it goes to use for so many different products. Some things that are mined can only go to a few things, whereas diatomite can go from cleaning toxins, to paint fillers, to filtering wine, to insecticides. I don’t like diatomite for the fact that it is not being recycled, and that no recycling programs are being put into use right now. Overall I think that diatomite is a worthwhile product and beneficial to consumers every day.

Juno and the Paycock

uno and the Paycock â€Å"O’Casey’s women in Juno and the Paycock are strong and admirable characters†. Juno and Mary Boyle’s lives aren’t very pleasant in this 1920’s play which is separated into three acts which contain a mixture of both tragic and humorous elements. Juno, the wife of Captain Boyle, is the mother of two children who are in constant need of attention from her. Furthermore, as the play continues this need of attention grows with the facts of financial difficulties, the pregnancy of Mary (daughter) and also her son’s, Johnny, death in the end.O’Casey clearly shows that Juno certainly has her work cut out for her, as she is not only the one person in the family who has a job, but also she is the house-wife and must render her family by making all the meals, going to buy the groceries, doing any form of house work and looking after the family in general. For example, on page 8 she says, â€Å"I killin’ mese lf workin’,† and also on page 12 she says, â€Å"Your poor wife slavin’ to keep the bit in your mouth†¦Ã¢â‚¬  these two references show just how hard Juno works to keep her family happy and alive. This is not made any easier when Mr.Boyle spends any money Juno has saved, in hope for any decent future for the family, on alcohol in the local pub. Therefore Juno cannot afford any type of luxuries for herself as she definitely does deserve it. The poverty is evident on page 12 in Juno’s comment to Mr. Boyle, â€Å"eat your breakfast†¦ it may be the last you’ll get for I don’t know where the next one is goin to come from. † But even this will not cause concern for Juno’s principles when on page six we learn that Juno is against Trade Unions, â€Å"When the employers sacrifice wan victim, the Trade Unions go wan betther be sacrificin’ a hundred. Then Mary tells her that, â€Å"a principle’s a principle†, but Juno stays realistic and thinks well it’s all good and well having principles – if you can afford them. She is the one who seems to keep the family as a unit and this is evidently shown when Juno says, ‘I don’t know what any o’ yous ud do without your ma’. Juno is a well respected member of the family and might even be superior to Mr. Boyle and Joxer, a family friend, because when the pair is talking on page nine, Mrs. Boyle enters and both are said to be ‘stupefied’.After this, she offers him an egg, and he makes the excuse that he’s in a desperate hurry – this may be because he does not want to spend much time there with Juno. Also the fact that Mr. Boyle lies on page thirteen about the fact he was drinking may indicate he was scared of Juno’s reaction if he had have told the truth, but later on in the same page we see that Juno will take no nonsense from her husband when he says he doesn’t w ant any food and she just says, ’Nobody’s goin’ to coax you-don’t think that. This suggests she’s a strong person, and if she doesn’t take nonsense from her husband, she won’t take any nonsense from anyone else. Johnny is a man who relies on a woman to bring him all that needs, displaying men to be controversially the weaker sex. He uses his ‘sickness’ to demand Juno to bring him glasses of water, when he could have easily fetched one himself.Even worse though, is that he is generally very bad-tempered towards his mother, constantly asking her to do things for him, which wears Juno down and makes her irritable, and ensures that she is nearly always in a bad frame of mind because she is never in this state unless annoyed by a family member, so she has her causes for being in bad moods whereas Mr. Boyle has none whatsoever. Then, when she specks out to Johnny’s complaining, it is with fervent remonstrance, she Ã¢â‚¬Ë œcries’, â€Å" who has kept th’ home together for the past few years – only me? An who’ll have to bear th’ biggest part o’ this trouble, but me? but whinin’ an whingin’ isn’t goin’ to do any good. † – this point is typical of the way Juno reacts to and deals with life. Juno knows what is important in life and when Johnny talks about his principles, â€Å"I’d do it agen ma; for a principle’s a principle. † To which Juno replies â€Å"Ah, you lost your best principle, me boy, when you lost your arm; them’s the only sort o’ principles that’s any good to a workin man. † This shows she thinks that fighting for your country and getting injured or dying isn’t going to solve anything, but bring grief, and more work.Juno’s outlook on life is ultimately more important than the others. She has not lost in principles, like her children, but she ackn owledges what’s going on in the world around her – which may be the fact of the poverty they live in and the restrictions because of this and also her family which she cares for so much. Mary seems like a confident girl who knows what she is doing all the time, but when Bentham decides to leave her, she loses this spirit. Before this, Mary was trying to better herself and lift herself out of her surrounding environment.This is shown when on page 12 she talks about her principles and wants to belong in the upper class, but feels where she lives may be degrading her. She was always willing to be challenged for example trying to better herself and becoming fully independent towards the end. Mary also becomes very much like her mother as the play proceeds and we see Mary’s other side, the side who works and it is shown that her mother and she have been brought closer together throughout the story. She now confides in her mother and this is shown at the end when she talks to Juno about Jerry.Also, it is significant that Mary is reading Ibsen plays as they are realistic and unromantic which is similar to this play, but contrasts with her life in general. I see Mary as an admirable person because of these points, but she is not totally sensible because she buys all sorts of luxuries with the money. Religion in Ireland was a very important thing and Mary and her family were catholic. Having sex before marriage was a sin in the eyes of a catholic so Mary was seen as a fallen woman in her culture, and Jerry Devine is one of the people who criticises her for this. My God, Mary, have you fallen as low as that? ‘ he says when finding out she is pregnant, as would any man in 1922 if they met a woman pregnant with an illegitimate child. Throughout â€Å"Juno and the Paycock†, Juno is linked to the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is an archetypal mother figure. O’Casey likens Juno to the Virgin Mary especially with reference to her relati onship with Johnny; the link is strengthened when, at the end of the play, Johnny is murdered, just like the Virgin Mary’s son.Additionally, O’Casey gives Juno the same name as the Roman goddess, wife of Jupiter, King of the gods. Throughout the entire play, she battles against poverty, ignorance, laziness and deceit all to keep her family from disintegrating. The dictionary definition of the word ‘heroine’ is â€Å"a woman with the attributes of a hero†. We expect our heroines to understand more than those around her and with this in mind I would contend that Juno is indeed the heroine of the play.
